Referring to the workplace learning theories and to the transmission theories, this article is interested in the civil engineering foremen training whose profession belongs to the field of the experience works. It examines the impact of the professional organization features, the role of the interactions with the tutors and the more experienced colleagues as well as the use by the trainees of the corporate resources. The analysis of interviews with trainees and trainers and the data coming from the field observations (...) show that the links between organizational factors and trainees ’ones have a great importance. The work situations, the trainees’ interactions with their partners, and the way they turn to good account the professional context resources, under certain conditions, strongly change the direction of the workplace learning during the vocational training. Depuis le début du siècle, des chercheurs ont expérimenté, mais sans succès, des greffes d’organes animaux. Pourtant, la xénogreffe puise de certaines réflexions antiques. La xénotransplantation est une alternative médicale futuriste au cours de laquelle on passe de la greffe d’organes humains à celle d’organes animaux. Ce dilemme nécessite une réflexion bioéthique. L’éthique distincte de la morale requiert un champ beaucoup plus ouvert qui met en tension différentes disciplines. C’est de cette tension que naît un questionnement qui suscite une réflexion (...) et une démarche spécifique. Pour ce faire, 42 étudiants tunisiens en 2e année de licence en biotechnologie sont invités à prendre une décision argumentée entre le fait d’accepter ou de refuser, en cas de nécessité absolue, une transplantation d’un cœur porcin. Nous constatons que l’approche adoptée par ces étudiants est plutôt déductive et les processus d’argumentations restreints mobilisés ne reflètent pas la tension qui caractérise le raisonnement dans ce genre de dilemme : la mort ou le fait d’accepter dans son corps un cœur porcin, d’autant plus que pour certaines religions, même la consommation de la viande de porc est un péché. Since Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967, the quest for just and lasting peace has been a fountainhead of debate, negotiation, and violent friction. Souad Dajani traces the Palestinians' struggle and argues for a strategy of nonviolent civilian resistance based on deterrence and defense. This strategy would defeat Israel's political will to maintain their occupation and prepare Palestinians for a time beyond the interim period of self-rule agreed upon by Israel and the PLO in (...) September 19932. Dajani's formulation of nonviolent civilian resistance is examined against a backdrop of early developments in Mandate Palestine, the impact of Zionist ideology, and the realities of life for Palestinians under occupation. Her assessment of the role of the PLO, objectives of the Palestinian National Movement, developments since the Gulf War, and other factors crucial to an effective strategy raises critical questions surrounding the operation of nonviolent techniques for the Palestinian community, Israeli politics, and international actors, most prominently the United States. The Oslo “peace process” launched in 1993 can be seen as the latest in a long line of attempts to circumvent the national rights of the Palestinians. In this article, Souad Dajani argues that, contrary to popular opinion, the Al-Aqsa Intifada was not due to non-compliance with Oslo but sterns from flaws built into Oslo since its inception. Essentially, Oslo failed to incorporate the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to national self-determination and return to their homeland. Les différents travaux de recherche en analyse du et des discours basés sur des corpus multimodaux ne limitent plus le langage à des formes et des règles, aussi évitent-ils de le réduire à l’utilisation de structures, de mots, ou de signes à deux facettes signifiant et signifié. D’emblée, dans un énoncé ou une énonciation voire dans un discours, chaque mot / acte de langage trouve sa légitimité d’utilisation dans le rapport qu’il entretient avec les unités linguistiques et les unités de (...) sens qui le précèdent et celles qui le suivent, aussi bien à l’écrit qu’à l’oral. En effet, la valeur et le rôle de tout praxème s’appréhendent dans sa place au sein de l’unité minimale qu’est l’énonciation et dans la prise en considération des paramètres linguistiques et extralinguistiques œuvrant à son actualisation dans le discours, donc de la prise en compte de la discursivisation. Il en ressort que, la forme et la règle déterminent, certes, la fonction de l’observable langagier mais ne mettent pas en évidence sa valeur discursive. Pour illustrer ce fait, nous aborderons la question de la fonction énoncive et de la valeur énonciative du syntagme nominal détaché représenté par les formes d’adresse dans le genre de discours Questions au gouvernement. Nous procèderons en relevant les syntagmes nominaux détachés et en les analysant hors et dans leur cotexte de production pour aboutir à la conclusion que le syntagme nominal détaché est très important dans ce genre du discours. As part of a roundtable on “Balancing Legal Norms, Moral Values, and National Interests,” this essay describes the humanitarian diplomacy of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) by comparing it conceptually with other forms of advocacy and illustrating it with the ICRC's recent experience in the Yemen crisis. Humanitarian diplomacy is examined as one particular way of balancing legal norms, moral values, and national interests in the pursuit of greater respect for international humanitarian law (IHL) and principled humanitarian (...) action in armed conflicts. The essay looks back to ancient history for archetypal forms of humanitarian advocacy in various cultural traditions. It then describes humanitarian diplomacy's practice of discreet diplomacy and confidential dialogue with all parties to a conflict, and compares its relatively “quiet” approach with the “loud” approach of outrage activism focused on “naming and shaming,” which tends to be the norm today. The essay argues that there is an important and complementary place for the ICRC's style of humanitarian diplomacy alongside other forms of advocacy even in the face of criticism that the ICRC is sometimes publicly silent about what it knows of atrocities and avoids naming and shaming. La poésie lyrique de Hâfez s'élève au niveau de la plus exigeante méditation philosophique. L'amour, qui est son foyer, n'y désigne pas une affection ou une passion de l'âme. Il fait écho à la théologie de l'amour qui s'est construite en islam au croisement du néoplatonisme avicennisant et du soufisme d'Ibn 'Arabî. Pour Hâfez, l'amour est ce qui de Dieu apparaît dans l'homme. Ses affres sont le mystère de la théophanie. Le ghazal est une fenêtre sur l'ontologie de la théophanie (...) et sur l'amphibolie du réel qu'elle induit. Il opère, dans la matière des figures qu'il sollicite, la coalescence des ordres de la réalité et des formes de la perception. Il révèle les ressources du sensible quand il devient cette réalité subtile lestée d'une matière transmuée. La poésie de Hâfez dévoile les paradoxes du réel, immanent et transcendant, sensible et intelligible, pour nous mettre sur la voie du paradoxe fondamental : le paradoxe de Dieu, qui est caché et apparent, et le paradoxe de la révélation, qui confère des noms et des attributs à une essence insondable. Ce faisant, elle côtoie les discours de la religion et de la philosophie. Le poète, en dévoilant le sens vrai de la révélation, devient le rival du religieux. Il trouve son site en un lieu défriché et balisé par le philosophe. Hâfez exprime dans l'unité et l'équilibre parfait du poème d'amour la théologie et l'ontologie que le philosophe formule dans des concepts abstraits. Il parachève le projet que la philosophie réalise partiellement et maladroitement. The lyrical poetry of Hâfez is in the upright position of the most accurate philosophical meditation. Its focus, which is love, is neither affection nor a passion of the soul. Love, in this place, is the matter of the theological theory of love born in Islam at the crossing of the Neo-Platonism of Avicenna and the Sufism of Ibn 'Arabî. According to Hâfez, Love proceeds from God and is made manifest in man. To endure the suffering of love is the secret of God's self-revelation. The ghazal uncloses the ontology of God's self-revelation and the ambiguous signification of the reality signified by it. By the modes of the poetical expression, divine realities and forms of perception are coalescing, and what the sensible supplies gets clearly visible. Hâfez's poetry unveils the paradox of divine reality, being both immanence and transcendence, intelligible and sensible. By this way, we are led to the essential paradox: the paradox of God, who is both hidden and evident, that is the paradox of revelation: the Essence is unknown, and yet it admits names and attributes. Thus, poetry joins with religion and philosophy. The poet unveils the true signification of revelation and thereby competes with the devout. He dwells in a place closely examined by the philosopher. Hâfez makes known the theological and ontological matters of abstract concepts of philosophy in the unity and perfect equilibrium of the poem. The poet brings to the end the philosopher's purpose, which the philosopher is unable to accomplish. (shrink)

The purpose of this contribution is to shed some light on the inter-relationships between ethics and economics in Islamic religion, and mainly to assert that ethics constitute endogenous phenomena in Islamic economics. In Islam, economic behaviours and transactions cannot be separated from ethics and values. The Islamic principles are intended to govern, direct and control human beings’ behaviours in their daily economic lives. They are aimed at helping people to distinguish between good and bad things while they do any economic (...) activity. It is worth noting that the moral values in Islamic economics are derived from the main sources of Islam namely: the Quran (the holy book of Islamic religion) and Sunnah (the teachings and behaviours of the prophet of Islam: Muhammad PBUH 570-632 AD). Both of them represent the principal pillars of Shariah (Islamic laws and guidelines), which is seen by Muslims as the proper way to happiness, not only in economic life but in all aspects of life. Children accrue experiences with buoyancy on a daily basis, yet research paints a mixed picture of children’s buoyancy knowledge. Whereas children’s predictions and explanations of the floating and the sinking of common objects are often based on a single feature (e.g., mass or facts), children’s predictions of novel cubes reveal solution strategies based on mass and volume integrations. Correspondingly, category learning theory suggests that categories (e.g., floaters vs. sinkers) are easier to identify when items mainly vary from one another in (...) the relevant defining features. For example, a set of cubes only varies in mass and volume and hence density, thereby being able to highlight the deterministic role of density when placed in water. Here we asked how item variation during hands-on exploration affects children’s subsequent predictions and explanations of buoyancy. Kindergarteners and first-, second-, and third-grade children individually explored either a set of 10 systematically varied cubes (i.e., systematic condition; n = 95) or a set of 10 common objects (i.e., non-systematic condition; n = 96) in a water basin. Next, the children predicted the buoyancy of five new cubes and five new common objects one at a time. Subsequently, the children explained their predictions one subset at a time. The children in the systematic condition were more accurate in their predictions of the test cubes than the children in the non-systematic condition. Latent class regression analyses identified three cube prediction solution strategies. The children in the systematic condition were more likely to use a strategy in which buoyancy decisions were made based on an accurate integration of mass and volume, while the children in the non-systematic condition were more likely to use a strategy in which mass was given more predictive load than volume. A third strategy was characterized by guessing. Latent class analyses of the children’s explanations revealed different explanation strategies, each appealing to several features, but as hypothesized, no clear condition differences were found. The findings indicate that even 5 min of exploration with systematically varied cubes can already help children use an advanced buoyancy prediction strategy. This provides evidence in favor of using category learning theory to inform early science education design. (shrink)

This paper is a critique of Ralph Wedgwood's recent attempt to use the framework of conceptual role semantics in metaethics. Wedgwood's central idea is that the action-guiding role of moral terms suffices to determine genuine properties as their semantic values. We argue that Wedgwood cannot get so much for so little. We explore two interpretations of Wedgwood's account of what it takes to be competent with a thin moral term. On the first interpretation, the account does not warrant the assignment (...) of a normative property as the semantic value of the target expression. On the second interpretation, the account presupposes that the subject has a prior understanding of normative notions. (shrink)

Ability is a key notion in much contemporary externalist epistemology. Various authors have argued that there is an ability condition on knowledge . Moreover, epistemic justification is also arguably tied to ability. Yet there is not total agreement amongst the interested parties about the conditions under which subjects possess abilities, nor the conditions under which a subject who possesses an ability exercises or manifests it. Here, I will address what conditions must obtain for a subject to possess an ability.

The distinction between “thick” and “thin” value concepts, and its importance to ethical theory, has been an active topic in recent meta-ethics. This paper defends three claims regarding the parallel issue about thick and thin epistemic concepts. (1) Analogy with ethics offers no straightforward way to establish a good, clear distinction between thick and thin epistemic concepts. (2) Assuming there is such a distinction, there are no semantic grounds for assigning thick epistemic concepts priority over the thin. (3) Nor does (...) the structure of substantive epistemological theory establish that thick epistemic concepts enjoy systematic theoretical priority over the thin. In sum, a good case has yet to be made for any radical theoretical turn to thicker epistemology. (shrink)

Using Ritzer’s McDonaldization of Society thesis as a reference point, this article contributes sociologically to burgeoning critical obesity studies. It does this using qualitative data from a study of men and weightrelated issues undertaken in northern England. Taking a counter-intuitive approach, it explores whether slimming proceeds in accord with the rationalizing principles of the fast-food restaurant: calculability, efficiency, predictability and technological control. Rather than reproducing a simplified and ultimately stigmatizing account, where fatness is a pathological bodily state caused by fast (...) food, this article explores the degree to which fatness is actively made into a correctable problem using McDonaldized principles. Irrationalities and meaningful resistances associated with the public and private fight against fat are also considered. (shrink)

In this commentary, I contend that a representative sample of the arguments in the target article miss the mark. In particular, the interface problem provides no warrant for positing similarities between representational formats, and the evidence from neurocognitive, animal, and behavioral studies is inconclusive at best. Finally, I raise doubts about whether the authors' central hypothesis is falsifiable.

Ethical issues surrounding the marketing and trade of controversial products such as tobacco require a better understanding. Virginia Slims, an exclusively women’s cigarette brand first launched in 1968 in the USA, was introduced during the mid 1980s to major Asian markets, such as Japan and Korea, dominated by male smokers. By reviewing internal corporate documents, made public from litigation, we examine the marketing strategies used by Philip Morris as they entered new markets such as Japan and Korea and consider the (...) extent that the company attempted to appeal to women in markets where comparatively few women were smokers. The case study of Virginia Slims reveals that the classification of “vulnerable” consumers is variable depending on culture, tobacco firms display responsive efforts and strategies when operating within a “mature” market, and cultural values played a role in informing Philip Morris’ strategic decision to embrace an adaptive marketing approach, particularly when entering the Korean market. Finally, moral questions are raised with tobacco being identified as a priority product for export and international trade agreements being used by corporations, governments, or trade partners in efforts to undermine domestic public health policies. Classes of examples are perfect PAC fields, model complete large fields and henselian valued fields of characteristic 0.

The Mind-Body problem is the problem of saying how a person’s mental states and events relate to his bodily ones. How does Oscar’s believing that water is cold relate to the states of his body? Is it itself a bodily state, perhaps a state of his brain or nervous system? If not, does it nonetheless depend on such states? Or is his believing that water is cold independent of his bodily states? And, crucially, what are the notions of dependence and (...) independence at issue here? (shrink)

Consumer psychologists now have a wide array of tools for studying the behavior of individuals in the marketplace. Attitudes, opinions, and activities are monitored on a regular basis by a large number of research organizations. Within the past half dozen years it has even become possible to merge all of those data at the level of the individual household. The result is a powerful tool for the analysis of consumer behavior. Such powerful tools for observation and analysis are the dream (...) of many social scientists and they certainly provide important and useful information for scholars, commercial organizations, and government regulators. Moore and Russell’s philosophical and personal paths through the early years of the twentieth century make a fascinating chronicle. Some of this story is familiar; but material from the unpublished Moore papers adds new and forceful detail to the account. It is a commonplace by now that Russell and Moore were not friends, although they maintained a long professional association. Their most intellectually intimate phase came early on, reaching a peak in 1897–99. But I show that during this period Moore (...) developed an indisputable antagonism toward Russell, which I argue was motivated by a form of intellectual self-preservation from the Russellian juggernaut. This slim volume contains a translation of the article Beau from the second volume of Diderot's Encyclopédie, plus a lengthy introduction to Diderot's work and a survey of esthetic theory in eighteenth-century England, France, and Germany as well. The translators do not mention the academic quarrels which plagued Diderot's article until 1952, when Lester G. Crocker resolved them once and for all in favor of Diderot. They also mistakenly attribute to Diderot the article Encyclopédie. These are, however, minor imperfections (...) in a text which serves as a solid introduction to Diderot studies. The translators have summarized many of Diderot's major works and have outlined significant problems in esthetics discussed by Hume, Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Wolff, Lessing, Winckelman, Montesquieu, Du Bos, and, of immediate significance to Diderot, the père Andre and the abbé Batteux. Other features of this book include extensive notes, a good index, a bibliography, and André Billy's compilation of Diderot's works in order of publication.—C. M. R. (shrink)
